Religion

Religion is a part of all cultures and consists of beliefs and behavior patterns by which people try to control the area of the universe that is otherwise beyond their control. Ritual is religion in action; and , through ritual social bonds is reinforced. Religion serves several important social functions. First it sanctions a wide range of conduct by providing notions of right and wrong. Second, it sets precedents for acceptable behavior. Third, religion serves to lift the burden of decision making from individuals and places responsibility with the Gods. Forth, religion plays a large role in maintaining social solidarity. Ritual ceremonies enhance learning of tribal lore.

Métis and Religion

Religion played an important role in the development of the Métis nation. Religions and their teachings touched every facet of Métis life, as religious influences can be traced in the areas of economic, social, and political aspects of their lives. Today, Métis subscribe to many religions including, Protestant denominations, Catholicism as well as Indian rituals. As with mainstream Canada , whether it is called “spiritually” or “religion” it is a personal choice for each Métis
