Métis Women in Ontario
Métis Women in Ontario is a member of the Métis National Council of Women, Inc., which is a national autonomous Métis women’s organization. Métis Women in Ontario seeks to assist in educating and empowering Métis women, in rural and urban communities. Our goal is to continue promoting change in Métis women’s lives through gathering and dispensing information as we believe increased awareness will assist Métis communities in developing local action plans for dealing with issues. Continued lobbying and advocacy will assist Métis women to address ways and means in remedying the economic, cultural, social, legal and political biases of inequality.
Some members of the Métis Women in Ontario have been involved in Métis women’s rights for over thirty-five years. There is a need to address systemic discrimination that has the effect of exclusion from decision-making processes and leadership opportunities for Métis women.
Métis women at the community level need to achieve equality of opportunity and outcome and access existing structures to address economic, political, civil and social rights for Métis women. Métis Women in Ontario was formed to promote a greater understanding of the traditions and roles of Metis women. Marginalization of Métis women is a problem and modification of attitudes, values and systems is an issue that Métis Women in Ontario addresses. There is a need for Métis women to become a positive force for change in their communities, by developing the knowledge and the ability to participate with all levels of government in policy development that impacts their lives.
